Discovering forgotten Irish composer Ina Boyle 1889 – 1967

UK Premiere for Irish Heritage

Ina Boyle pictureThough now largely forgotten, Ina Boyle was considered to be one of the most prolific and important composers in Ireland before 1950.  She travelled regularly to London for lessons with Vaughan Williams who thought highly of her. Performances in London included the Proms in 1923 and conductors of her music included Sir Henry Wood and Sir Adrian Boult.

Unfortunately the outbreak of World War.2 cut her off from London musical life. Though occasional performances of her music did take place in London and Dublin she was largely forgotten and her music in Trinity College Library awaited rediscovery.

However, a major revival of interest in Ina Boyle and her music is underway with performances being planned in Ireland and the UK.  These include the premiere of the complete performance of the Glencree Symphony performed by the National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin as part of RTE Retrospective of the Centenary Celebrations in 2016.

Friends of Irish Heritage will have the opportunity to hear the music of Ina Boyle performed by outstanding young Irish musicians in 2016 in London. Two song settings of poems by Padraig Pearse will receive their UK premiere in the recital on the 17th February 2016 ‘A Century of Song and Opera in Ireland to be performed by the hugely talented Jennifer Davies (soprano), Aaron O’Hare (baritone) with Maître Carroll (piano). This takes place in The Royal Over-Seas League, St James, SW1A 1LR.

The Conservatoires of Ireland Showcase Recital on 12th April 2016 at the Guildhall, Silk Street, EC2Y 9BH, will feature the first London recital since 1937 of Ina Boyle’s the String Quartet, performed by the Chiral Quartet from CIT Cork School of Music.
